Polish Day at St Joseph's, September 2009
A Polish Day was organised by a team of Polish friends of St Joseph's on the last weekend of September. We were extremely lucky to have a warm sunny afternoon in which to celebrate the event in the grounds. We started off with a prayer of thanksgiving and each person being offered bread and salt as a welcome gesture as is the custom in Poland. We enjoyed a wonderful meal of polish soup ‘flaki’, meat stew with cabbage ‘bigos’ and lots of wonderful polish cakes, all enjoyed with polish beer and vodka mixed with apple juice. The polish dance group ‘Tatry’ entertained us with traditional songs and music and at the end invited the students and guests to join in. Paper mache horses that were made in the art class were used to reinact a historical event. One of our staff played Chopin as we all enjoyed a feast of a variety of polish cakes. A raffle and tombola were held and there was a table showing different polish traditions. In all a great afternoon in support of our friends with learning difficulties.
